Love Your Neighbor as Yourself – Remembering Danny O’Callaghan
In 1984, 19-year-old Verona resident Daniel (Danny) O’Callaghan noticed a group of youths being menaced by a gang in a parking lot in Verona, where Montclair Acura now stands. When Danny went to their aid, he was struck in the back of the head with a golf club. He passed away three days later.
Danny’s funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Lake took place just one day after he was scheduled to report for duty at Marine boot camp. His father, Patrick, told The New York Times at the time that his son “was someone who was always willing to give of himself. And even though it cost him his life, what he did should be held up as an example to others.” Police described Danny as a Good Samaritan.
In 1987, Our Lady of the Lake opened the Danny O’Callaghan Youth Center, which for many years served as a welcoming place for teenagers to gather and grow, experiencing God’s love through community and friendship. The Danny O’Callaghan Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance soon became an annual event celebrating his legacy.
After a brief hiatus, we are proud to hold the Danny O’Callaghan Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance in 2026 and to share Danny’s example with a new generation of OLL parishioners. His willingness to go to the aid of others will never be forgotten. Danny reminded us that our neighbors are anyone in need, and through his selfless kindness to strangers in distress, he showed us what it truly means to love one another.
