Faith Formation at OLL

And what does the Lord require of you but to act justly, to love kindly, and to walk humbly with God.

Micah 6:8

About Faith Formation at OLL

To prepare young people to receive the Good News and to respond to the Gospel message in their lives, Our Lady of the Lake's parents, staff, and catechists have united in their efforts to build a quality program of religious education that will lead our first through ninth grade children to a greater understanding and deeper appreciation of God's loving acts.

Vatican II has affirmed parents as the first, most important faith formers of their children, for it is in the family, the domestic church, that faith matures and active discipleship begins. Christ uses the rhythms of family life as catechetical moments on our life long and life changing journey — our mission.

Our faith encompasses so much more than just knowledge of Church doctrine. It is, rather, a celebration of union and intimacy with Jesus Christ. It is through our actions, integrating the knowledge in our head with the love and compassion in our hearts, that our faith is formed.

Recognizing parents as the foremost models of faith for their children, our program aims to assist parents:

  • to teach Christ's message fully

  • to encourage the prayer life of each child

  • to encourage participation in the liturgy and sacraments, and

  • to provide opportunities for the children to express concern for others through apostolic service within the parish family and beyond.

It is in preaching the Gospel at all times, using words when necessary as St Francis espouses, that we hand on our faith to our children and honor the promises made for them at Baptism.

Faith Formation Registration

All participants in our program must be registered in our parish. For students who are entering first grade or who are new to the parish, a copy of the Baptismal certificate is required in addition to the registration form and the Policies & Procedures receipt. If your child may need an EpiPen, you (and your child's physician) also need to fill in the EpiPen forms that apply and return them with your registration forms (or before the end of August). Please download and review all four documents, including the 2021-2022 year Policies & Procedures.

Registration fees for the 2021-22 term for grade 1-9 are $150 for one child, $220 for two children, and $285 for three children ($85 for each additional child in the program). If you register for this term before September 1, 2021, a $25 discount per student applies. You may submit one check to cover all registration fees for grades 1-9.

All completed registration information may be mailed or dropped off at the Our Lady of the Lake Pastoral Center, 22 Lakeside Avenue, Verona NJ 07044.  This is the former convent located on the Bloomfield Avenue side of the school.   The entrance faces Montrose Avenue and is across from the OLL School playground and the statue of Mary.

Schedule

We hold a total of 24 sessions during the school year (mid-September through mid-May). Each session is 90 minutes long.  All classes are held in the OLL School buildings. They take place on Sunday mornings 10:00 - 11:30, Monday afternoons 3:30-5:00 and on Monday evenings 7:00-8:30. Depending on demand, we may also offer classes on Tuesday afternoons (3:30 to 5:00 pm). Classes are filled in the order that registrations are received. The sooner you register, the more likely your child(ren) will be placed in a class on the day and time of your choice.

Classes for the 9th grade Confirmation Prep year take place once a month on Sunday mornings.  There are 2 different tracks, one from 8:45am-11:00am and the other from 10:45am-1:00pm.  This will be supplemented by individual work at home and also includes a retreat.

Family Faith Formation

We have a Family Faith Formation option for those families who wish to teach their child(ren) at home. Family Faith Formation will use the same curriculum and materials as our traditional Faith Formation classes. In addition to the learning they do at home, students and parents are expected to attend six monthly meetings on Sunday mornings starting with the 9:00 am Mass. The meetings will take place in the OLL School cafeteria and we will discuss specific topics, assess student progress, distribute the materials for the following weeks, and share refreshments.
